Why are we continuing to normalize the Trump “Administration”? It’s a regime. Why are we not weaponizing language?
As per title, I realize we on the left have followed traditions when our side has held power, but why must we insist on normalizing clearly abnormal behavior, or dare I say, leadership?
“Regime” is much more befitting of our current leadership, I wager. It’s meant to convey authoritarian connotations. Historically we’ve used the word ‘regime’ to describe leaders who rule through undemocratic means, ones that lack legitimacy (‘Leon’, anyone?), and engage in oppressive tactics.
I really think we need to give up on this notion of normalcy. The neutral niceties that we’ve extended past governments no longer applies. And given that we wield little power at the moment, I think we need to make use of language - and even rhetorical devices to describe the very real situation we find ourselves in. We need simple, visceral names that stick.
Why are we not weaponizing language the way the right does? I argue that if we can’t lean in to language to articulate simple, sometimes guttural messages, we’re missing the mark. It’s like we’re advertising to audiences that don’t exist.
The GOP has weaponized our own language against us as a cudgel (DEI, Woke, Uplift, equity, even diversity). We need to be more creative here. We need to appeal to the average American’s psyche.
Calling them ‘fascist’ etc. doesn’t hold water; doesn’t stick, and is too abstract a notion for the typical voter to grasp.
Why do we continue to placate some imaginary normalcy? If we can’t figure out how to wield language effectively, simply, and quickly, we’re losing. I realize we’re the party of education but we need more simplistic mindrot to stand a chance IMO.
