This Oscar campaign/ second half of press tour is exhausting
Her constant interviews are frustrating because all she ever talks about is how singing as Glinda is completely different from singing as a pop star. That’s fine and all—her voice and technique obviously have to change—but if this is your dream role, is that really all you have to say? There’s so much depth to the character, yet she barely discusses Glinda’s development, motivations, or nuances. Instead, she focuses on surface-level aspects like method acting, dyeing her hair, and even selecting specific underwear for the role. While those details might be mildly interesting, they don’t translate into a performance that feels deeply layered or transformative. Like the way Chu and the rest of the cast talked about her performance, I was expecting way more when I watched it. The way she attempts to deconstruct her acting choices and analyze the character only highlights how shallow her interpretation feels.
On top of that, what’s the point of all these interviews if she keeps repeating the same things? The affair completely derailed the press tour because now the interviewers can’t ask her any meaningful or challenging questions. Instead, they have to keep things light and superficial to avoid controversy and distract the audience. It’s exhausting to watch because it adds nothing to the film’s actual promotion. At this point, it doesn’t even feel like she’s genuinely invested in discussing the movie itself—just in damage control.
