Hi... I have a problem with how people write Hispanics Latinos and Spaniards in fanficts.
Hi, i'm a Chilean, first i want to thank the writters who make an effort to learn about Latino culture and include it in their stories, even if it's not perfect. With this post i just want to give attention to certain pet pevees that have make me feel kinda uncomfortable and i want to share them with the intent of there beign better representation.
Ok... Sorry if this comes out kinda rant like, i promise i'm not mad with anyone, it just is kinda disappointing when you are reading a really good fic and suddenly something irks you the wrong way.
I have come to realize people make really weird mistakes when writing characters with Latino background.
What do i mean? Well... The most common is that they have a Spaniard character use idioms that are exclusively used in latino countries (more often Mexico). It's like if you made an American talk like an Australian.
Other things i have noticed:
-Characters that are Latino in canon and have white skin are frequently made to have darker skin (please let Latinos with withe skin exist, they are not as uncommon as you think)
-"Hispanic" is used interchangeably with the word "Latino". If you tell me your character is a Hispanic i have no idea from even what continent they are from.
- This is more of a nitpick, but most hispanics don't talk like Dora the explorer, at least not most of the time. It is more appropriate to give your character an accent
Or maybe have them strugle to find a certain word in english and asking the person they are speaking how do you say when you are ----- but are also ------ , etc. etc. i think it's also ok if they ask " do you how do you say -spanish- in english??" (This question doesn't have any logic but myself and others do this irl when we get frustrated because of not remembering a single word)
Edit: i have changed the third point because i didn't word it well! But it just is my personal take and it may not be the best solution, i love the takes of some people on the comments in this subject.
Edit 2: thank you to everyone who's participating on how we as a community can improve on handling the characterizations of characters and how important it is to have good natured discussions that include latinoamericans and spaniards!
Also thanks to the people in the comments of countries (in latam or not) with languages outside of spanish!! I'm very interested in what issues you guys face :)
Edit 3: dislexia strikes again, my bad!
